Adult Skating
Achieve your dreams, and experience the excitement! |
|
Whether you are new to the
sport of figure skating or a seasoned veteran ready to return to
competition, the USFSA Adult Skating Program has a place for
you!
Where
do I begin?
Where you begin
depends on where you left off. Some folks are new to
skating and have never taken a test, while others have competed
in the standard track at the national level. The USFSA
recognizes that adults who skated as children will have superior
skills to those who learn as adults. Therefore, an "adult
skater" is defined as someone who learned to skate after the age
of 25 or tested no higher than juvenile free skating as a
youngster. Individuals aged 25 and older who have passed
the intermediate free skating or higher are classified as
masters level skaters.

Opportunities in Adult Skating
The Adult
Skating Testing Program is broken down into five disciplines,
each one divided into several test levels culminating in an
adult gold medal for the successful candidate:
Moves in the Field - pre-bronze, bronze,
silver and gold levels.
Pairs - bronze, silver and gold levels
Figures - bronze, silver and gold levels
Dance* - preliminary, pre-bronze, bronze, pre-silver,
silver, pre-gold and gold levels.
*Depending on the dance level, candidates may have the choice of
testing at the standard or adult levels.
Neither and adult free skating nor an adult pair test may be
taken before the candidate has passed the corresponding moves in
the field test.
Skaters who pass
the adult gold moves in the field test, adult gold free skating
tests or adult gold pair test may enter the standard track of
testing at the intermediate level of that discipline, beginning
with the intermediate moves in the field tests.
Masters-level skaters may continue with their testing on the
standard track. |

Competing as an
Adult |
Adults interested
in all-adult competitions will find no shortage of events to
enter in the USFSA. Adult opens are hosted throughout the
year, including the Atlanta Peach Classic in September and the
New York Winter Classic in February. Adult sectionals are
held in each section of the country (Pacific Coast, Midwestern
and Eastern), including both open and qualifying events, and
take place approximately six weeks before the U.S. Adult
Championships -- the highlight of the adult competitive season.
There are also several opportunities for adults to compete
internationally-- including La Couple de la Montagne (The
Mountain Cup), held in Villard de Lans, France in May or June
Adult competitions divide competitors by age and ability, and
many offer not only free skating events but also interpretive,
dance, pairs, compulsory moves, solo dance and spin events.
Age groups are as follows:
Group I - 25 - 35 years
Group II - 36 - 46 years
Group III - 47 - 55 years
Group IV - 56 and over
|
What about those skaters under the age of 25?
Many adult competitions, including adult
sectionals, now include skaters age 18-24 in a new group titled
Young Adults. Young adults are skaters who many have
started skating late or are no longer competitive at
standard-track competitions. The grouping provides a
competitions opportunity for these young adults who have limited
time and resources but still wish to compete.
Where can I find more information on competitions?
Current information on adult competitions as
well as applications for the events are available online at the
USFSA website (go to USFSA
Programs, then select ADULT). SKATING magazine also lists
competitions in each issue, on it's calendar-of-events. |
